Earth Not a Globe est un projet commencé en 2023 et toujours en cours aujourd’hui. Certaines des œuvres présentées chez Contretype seront spécialement produites pour l’exposition. Le projet tire son nom de l’ouvrage fondateur de l’une des théories du complot les plus célèbres, selon laquelle la Terre serait plane et non sphérique. Étayée par Samuel Birley Rowbotham à la fin du XIXème siècle, cette théorie a encore aujourd’hui une large communauté d’adeptes.
Cette exposition fait partie du programme du PhotoBrussels Festival 2026.

Earth Not a Globe is an ongoing project begun in 2023 and still in progress today. Several of the works presented at Contretype will be produced especially for the exhibition. The project takes its name from the seminal publication behind one of the most famous conspiracy theories, which claims that the Earth is flat rather than spherical. Developed by Samuel Birley Rowbotham at the end of the 19th century, this theory still has a large community of followers today.
This exhibition is part of the PhotoBrussels Festival 2026.

Earth not a globe (La Terre n'est pas une sphère ) est un projet qui se concentre sur les "Flat-Earthers" (Flat-Earthers), une communauté de personnes croyant que la Terre est plate. En marchant sur la surface de la planète, celle-ci paraît et semble plate, c’est pourquoi les Flat-Earthers croient ce qu'ils voient pour discerner la véritable nature du monde qui les entoure et, d’une certaine manière, ne voient que ce qu’ils croient. Ils affirment que nos yeux ne peuvent pas être fiables, mais se réfèrent uniquement à des approches empiriques.
Ils utilisent largement des photomontages et des vidéos comme armes de propagande tout en rejetant les images de la Terre sphérique comme des fabrications d’une "conspiration de la Terre plate" orchestrée par la NASA et d’autres agences gouvernementales. Le titre du projet trouve son origine dans des livres écrits par Samuel Birley Rowbotham au XIXe siècle. L'hypothèse de la Terre plate a prospéré à l'époque moderne grâce à la prolifération des technologies de communication, qui ont permis à certains individus de diffuser des idées pseudo-scientifiques et de rassembler des followers plus nombreux.
La croyance que la Terre est plate a été décrite comme la théorie de la conspiration ultime. Les théories du complot sont attrayantes parce qu’elles offrent des explications simples pour des phénomènes complexes, ou parce qu’elles donnent aux gens l’illusion de détenir un savoir secret que les puissants cherchent à garder caché. Elles deviennent des prophètes qui détiennent une information que le reste du monde est supposé être trop aveugle pour voir. La photographie et le cinéma exercent dans notre société un pouvoir culturel et politique déterminant. Les images, quelle que soit leur origine, sont devenues des instruments de connaissance, de débat et d’influence.
En tant que photographe adoptant une approche documentaire avec un appareil 4x5, Braquenier suppose avoir réalisé un travail documentaire fidèle sur cette communauté, alors que tout est en réalité mis en scène. Chaque image s'inspire de la mythologie des Flat-Earthers et recrée une scène réelle ou un photomontage partagé. À travers divers médias, Braquenier utilise son autorité d’artiste pour questionner l’acte de voir à l’ère de la post-vérité. Son objectif est d’explorer que les faits sont purement subjectifs, que la vérité est une notion suspecte, que la réalité est une construction sociale et que les êtres humains sont intrinsèquement biaisés.

Earth not a globe is a project that focuses on the so-called Flat-Earthers, a community of people who believe that the Earth is flat. When walking on the planet’s surface, it appears and feels flat; Flat-Earthers therefore trust what they see to discern the true nature of the world around them and, in a way, see only what they believe. They claim that our eyes cannot be trusted, yet rely exclusively on empirical approaches.
They widely use photomontages and videos as propaganda tools while dismissing images of a spherical Earth as fabrications produced by a “Flat Earth conspiracy” orchestrated by NASA and other government agencies.
The project’s title originates from books written by Samuel Birley Rowbotham in the 19th century. The flat-Earth hypothesis found renewed momentum in the modern era through the proliferation of communication technologies, enabling individuals to spread pseudo-scientific ideas and gather larger followings.The belief that the Earth is flat has been described as the ultimate conspiracy theory. Conspiracy theories are appealing because they offer simple explanations for complex phenomena, or because they give people the illusion of holding secret knowledge that powerful institutions are supposedly trying to conceal. They become prophets claiming access to information that the rest of the world is too blind to see.
Photography and film hold significant cultural and political power in our society. Images, whatever their origin, have become instruments of knowledge, debate and influence.
Working with a 4x5 camera and adopting a documentary stance, Braquenier appears to be producing a faithful documentary study of this community, while in reality everything is staged. Each image draws on the mythology of Flat-Earthers and recreates an actual scene or a shared photomontage.
Through various media, Braquenier uses the authority of the artist to question the act of seeing in the age of post-truth. His aim is to explore the idea that facts are purely subjective, that truth is a suspicious notion, that reality is a social construct, and that human beings are intrinsically biased.
