Un dispositif au service de la création émergente

Lancé par Contretype en 2023, archipel est un programme annuel dédié au soutien et à la visibilité de la scène photographique émergente en Belgique. Bien plus qu'une simple exposition collective, ce projet a été conçu dès l'origine comme un véritable dispositif d'accompagnement artistique.Il s'adresse aux artistes dont la démarche prospective explore l’image dans toutes ses dimensions : expérimentale, documentaire, plastique ou performative.

Philosophie et Démarche

    Le projet repose sur une sélection exigeante effectuée par un jury d'expert.e.s à la suite d'un appel à candidatures national. archipel ne cherche pas à imposer une thématique globale ; il privilégie la coexistence de regards singuliers. L'exposition est pensée comme un espace de frottement et de circulation entre des pratiques hétérogènes — de la photographie argentique aux installations hybrides — permettant au sens d'émerger de l'expérience même de la traversée. Chaque édition permet de soutenir six artistes à travers :

    • Un budget d’aide à la production.

    • Le versement de droits d’auteur.

    • Un accompagnement critique et technique personnalisé.

    • Une mise en réseau professionnelle durable.

2026 : La mutation en réseau transfrontalier

  • Pour sa 4ème édition en 2026, archipel franchit une étape décisive en devenant un réseau professionnel impliquant cinq structures professionnelles de l'image en Belgique et dans le Nord de la France :

    1. Contretype (Bruxelles)

    2. La Biennale de l’Image Possible / BIP (Liège)

    3. Le CRP/ Centre régional de la PhotographieHauts-de-France(Douchy-les-Mines)

    4. La Fabrique des Regards (Bruxelles)

    5. ILES asbl / Artist Project (Bruxelles)

    Ce réseau vise à mutualiser les ressources et les expertises pour offrir aux lauréat.e.s un relais après l'exposition (résidence, mentorat, aide à la diffusion…) répondant ainsi à la fragilisation économique du secteur culturel.

A tool supporting emerging creation

Launched by Contretype in 2023, archipel is an annual program dedicated to supporting and providing visibility to the emerging photography scene in Belgium. Much more than a simple group exhibition, this project was designed from the outset as a genuine artistic support program. It is aimed at artists whose forward-looking approach explores the image in all its dimensions: experimental, documentary, visual, or performative.

    The project relies on a rigorous selection made by a jury of experts following a national call for applications. archipel does not seek to impose an overarching theme; it favors the coexistence of singular perspectives. The exhibition is conceived as a space of friction and circulation between heterogeneous practices—from analog photography to hybrid installations—allowing meaning to emerge from the experience of the journey itself.

    Each edition supports six artists through:

    • A production support budget.

    • The payment of copyright fees.

    • Personalized critical and technical mentorship.

    • A lasting professional networking framework.

2026 : The mutation into a cross-border network

  • For its 4th edition in 2026, archipel takes a decisive step forward by becoming a professional network involving five photography organizations in Belgium and Northern France:

    • La Biennale de l’Image Possible / - BIP (Liège)

    • Le CRP/ Centre régional de la Photographie Hauts-de-France (Douchy-les-Mines)

    • La Fabrique des Regards (Brussels)

    This network aims to pool resources and expertise to offer winners ongoing support after the exhibition (residency, mentorship, distribution aid…), thereby addressing the economic vulnerability of the cultural sector.
